Cancel your Planet Fitness membership in about 15 minutes. Unlike most subscriptions, Planet Fitness does not allow cancellation online, by phone, by email, or through the app. You must cancel in person at your home club or by sending a certified letter.
The most straightforward way to cancel is to visit the Planet Fitness location where you signed up. This is your "home club," and it is the only location that can process your cancellation in person. You cannot cancel at a different Planet Fitness location, even if you have a Black Card membership that grants access to all clubs.
1Visit Your Home Club
Go to the Planet Fitness location where you originally signed up. Bring a valid photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport). If you are unsure which club is your home club, check your membership agreement or log in at planetfitness.com.
2Request Cancellation at the Front Desk
Tell the front desk staff that you want to cancel your membership. They may ask for your reason, but you are not required to provide one. The staff will pull up your account and provide a cancellation form.
3Complete the Cancellation Form
Fill out the cancellation form with your name, address, membership ID number, and signature. Read the form carefully before signing — confirm the effective cancellation date and whether any remaining fees apply.
4Get Written Confirmation
Ask for a printed or emailed copy of your cancellation confirmation. This is your proof that the cancellation was submitted. Keep it until you verify that billing has stopped on your bank or credit card statement.
Planet Fitness requires cancellation to be submitted by the 10th of the month to avoid being billed for the following month. If you cancel after the 10th, you will be charged for one more month. To avoid the annual fee, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is due.
By Certified Letter
If you cannot visit your home club in person — for example, if you have moved — you can cancel by mailing a letter to your home club via USPS Certified Mail. This gives you a tracking number and delivery confirmation as proof that your cancellation was received.
1Write Your Cancellation Letter
Include your full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, membership ID number (found on your key tag or in your online account), and a clear statement requesting cancellation of your Planet Fitness membership. Date and sign the letter.
2Find Your Home Club Address
Look up the mailing address of the specific Planet Fitness location where you signed up. You can find this at planetfitness.com/gym-locations. Do not send the letter to Planet Fitness corporate — it must go directly to your home club.
3Send via USPS Certified Mail
Take your letter to the post office and send it via USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. This costs a few dollars but provides proof of mailing and delivery. Keep the receipt and tracking number.
4Verify Delivery and Billing
Track your letter at usps.com to confirm delivery. After the delivery date, monitor your bank or credit card statements to verify that Planet Fitness has stopped charging you. Allow up to 7 business days for processing after the club receives your letter.
You cannot cancel a Planet Fitness membership by phone, email, online chat, through the Planet Fitness app, or on the Planet Fitness website. The only accepted methods are in person at your home club or by certified letter. This policy applies to all membership types, including Classic and PF Black Card.
Watch out for the annual fee. Planet Fitness charges an annual fee of $49 (or $39 at some locations) once per year, typically around two months after your signup date. If your cancellation is not processed before this date, you will be billed for the annual fee and it is generally not refundable. If you have a commitment-term membership and cancel early, you will also owe a $58 buyout fee. Month-to-month memberships have no buyout fee.
Planet Fitness Refund Policy
Planet Fitness generally does not issue refunds for membership dues or annual fees that have already been charged. Once a payment has been processed, it is considered final.
There are limited exceptions where a refund may be possible:
Billing error: If you were charged after your cancellation was confirmed and you have written proof of the cancellation, contact your home club manager to request a refund.
Duplicate charges: If you were billed twice in the same period due to a system error, the club should reverse the duplicate charge.
Manager discretion: Individual club managers have the authority to issue refunds on a case-by-case basis, though this is not guaranteed.
If your club refuses a refund and you believe the charge was unauthorized, you can file a dispute with your bank or credit card company. Provide your cancellation confirmation and certified mail receipt as supporting documentation.
