How to Cancel Any Subscription (Step-by-Step)

·3 min read

A practical guide to canceling subscriptions on iOS, Android, and directly with service providers. Covers the three main cancellation methods and what to watch for.

Most subscriptions can be canceled in under two minutes. The process depends on where the subscription was purchased.

Three Cancellation Methods

Subscriptions are billed through one of three channels. Identify which one applies, then follow the steps below.

1. Through Google Play (Android)

If you subscribed via Google Play:

  1. Open Google Play Store
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Select the subscription you want to cancel
  5. Tap Cancel subscription
  6. Follow the confirmation prompts

Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.

2. Through the App Store (iOS)

If you subscribed via Apple:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Select the subscription
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription

Apple does not issue partial refunds. You keep access until the period ends.

3. Directly With the Service

Some services handle billing themselves (not through app stores). Examples: Netflix, Spotify (web signups), Adobe, gym memberships.

  1. Log into the service's website or app
  2. Find Account, Billing, or Subscription settings
  3. Look for Cancel or Cancel Plan
  4. Complete any confirmation steps
  5. Save the cancellation confirmation email

Check your email for a confirmation. If you do not receive one within 24 hours, contact the service directly.

Common Issues

"I canceled but I'm still being charged." You may have multiple subscriptions to the same service through different channels. Check both your app store subscriptions and the service's own billing page.

"I can't find the cancel button." Some services make cancellation deliberately difficult. Look in Account Settings, not the main app interface. If the app has no cancel option, try the service's website instead.

"Will I lose my data?" Most services keep your data for 30-90 days after cancellation. Check the service's data retention policy before canceling if this matters to you.

Keep Track of What Stays

After canceling, update your subscription tracker so you have an accurate picture of your remaining costs. ReSubs lets you mark subscriptions as canceled while keeping them in your history for reference.
