Step-by-step guide to cancel your Microsoft 365 subscription online, on iOS, or Android. Learn about refund eligibility and what happens to your files.
Cancel your Microsoft 365 subscription in about 5 minutes. Choose the method below that matches how you originally subscribed.
The most straightforward way to cancel Microsoft 365 is through the Microsoft account portal. This method works for subscriptions purchased directly from Microsoft, including Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Basic plans.
1Go to Microsoft Account Services
Open your web browser and navigate to account.microsoft.com/services. This takes you directly to the services and subscriptions page for your Microsoft account.
2Sign In
Sign in with the Microsoft account (email address and password) you used to purchase the subscription. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, make sure you are using the correct one.
3Find Microsoft 365
Locate your Microsoft 365 subscription in the list. It may appear as Microsoft 365 Personal, Microsoft 365 Family, or Microsoft 365 Basic depending on your plan.
4Select Manage
Click Manage next to your Microsoft 365 subscription. This opens the subscription management page where you can view billing details and cancellation options.
5Click Cancel Subscription
Click Cancel subscription. Microsoft may present you with offers to stay, such as a discounted rate or a plan switch. Decline these if you want to proceed with cancellation.
6Confirm Cancellation
Review the cancellation summary, including when your access will end and any refund you may receive. Click Confirm cancellation to finalize the process. Check your email for a cancellation confirmation from Microsoft.
After your Microsoft 365 subscription ends, Office apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint switch to read-only mode. You can still open and view your documents, but you cannot edit, create, or save new files. Your OneDrive storage drops to 5 GB, so download any files that exceed this limit before your subscription expires.
If you do not want to cancel immediately, you can turn off recurring billing instead. This lets you keep using Microsoft 365 until the end of your current billing period without being charged again. Go to the Manage page for your subscription and toggle off recurring billing.
On the App Store (iOS)
If you subscribed to Microsoft 365 through Apple's App Store, you must cancel through Apple's subscription settings. Canceling through the Microsoft website will not work for App Store subscriptions.
1Open iPhone Settings
Tap the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad home screen.
2Tap Your Apple ID
At the top of the Settings menu, tap your name and Apple ID banner to open your Apple ID account management screen.
3Select Subscriptions
Tap Subscriptions from the list. You will see all active and expired subscriptions linked to your Apple ID.
4Select Microsoft 365
Find and tap Microsoft 365 from your list of active subscriptions. If you do not see it listed, your subscription was not purchased through Apple and you need to cancel through the Microsoft website instead.
5Cancel the Subscription
Tap Cancel Subscription at the bottom of the screen, then confirm when prompted. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.
If you subscribed through Apple, Apple's refund policy applies instead of Microsoft's. To request a refund for an App Store purchase, visit reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple typically processes refund requests within 48 hours.
On Google Play (Android)
If you subscribed to Microsoft 365 through the Google Play Store, you need to cancel through Google's subscription management.
Tap your profile icon in the top right corner of the Play Store to open the account menu.
3Go to Payments & Subscriptions
Select Payments & subscriptions from the menu, then tap Subscriptions. You will see a list of all your active Google Play subscriptions.
4Select Microsoft 365
Find and tap Microsoft 365 from the list. If it does not appear here, your subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft and you need to cancel through the Microsoft account website.
5Cancel Your Subscription
Tap Cancel subscription and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm. Your access continues until the current billing cycle ends.
Google Play subscriptions follow Google's refund policy. To request a refund for a Google Play purchase, visit Google Play Help.
Microsoft 365 Refund Policy
Microsoft offers refunds for Microsoft 365 cancellations, but the terms depend on your account type and how long ago you subscribed or renewed:
Within 30 days of purchase or renewal: If you cancel within the first 30 days, you are generally eligible for a full refund. Microsoft processes the refund automatically after cancellation, and it typically takes 3 to 5 business days to appear on your statement.
After 30 days: Once the 30-day window has passed, you are not eligible for a refund for the current billing period. You can turn off recurring billing so your subscription continues until the end of the current term without renewing.
Prorated refunds in select countries: In certain countries including Canada, Denmark, Germany, Israel, South Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Turkey, Microsoft provides prorated refunds even after the initial refund window. If you are in one of these regions, you may receive a partial refund for the unused portion of your subscription.
App Store and Google Play purchases: If you purchased Microsoft 365 through Apple or Google, their respective refund policies apply. Contact Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com or Google at Google Play Help to request a refund.
