How to Cancel Subscriptions Through Your Bank (Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo & More)
·Updated Jun 9, 2026·5 min read
Your bank app can find and stop recurring charges. Here's how to cancel subscriptions in Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Capital One, and Chime — and what banks can't do.
Bottom Line: Most major banks now show your recurring charges and let you block a card or place a stop payment. That stops the money — but it does not cancel your agreement with the merchant. Use your bank to find and block charges, then cancel with the merchant to avoid fees or a backup-card retry.
When you can't find a cancel button inside an app, your bank is the next best place to look. Modern banking apps include tools to spot recurring charges and shut them off. Here's how the biggest US banks handle it, what each tool is called, and the one thing your bank can't do for you.
What Your Bank Can and Can't Do
Your bank can: show recurring charges, lock or freeze a card, issue a new card number, place a stop payment on a specific merchant, and dispute unauthorized charges.
Your bank can't: end your contract with the merchant. If you only block the payment, the merchant may report you as past-due, retry a backup card, or send the balance to collections. Always cancel the subscription with the merchant as well.
Chase
1Open Recurring Charges
In the Chase app, tap your profile or an account, then look for Recurring charges (Chase surfaces detected subscriptions automatically).
2Review the List
Chase lists merchants billing you on a repeat schedule with amounts and dates.
3Cancel With the Merchant, Then Block
Cancel the plan on the merchant's side. If a charge persists, use Lock card or call the number on the back of your card to dispute or stop payment.
Bank of America
1Search Your Transactions
In the BofA app, use search to find the recurring merchant and amount.
2Ask Erica
Ask the Erica assistant to show recurring or subscription charges.
3Lock the Card or Dispute
Use Lock/Manage card in card settings to block charges, and dispute any unauthorized recurring payment from the transaction detail.
Know exactly what you’re spending.
ReSubs shows your total subscription cost, tracks renewals, and alerts you before charges hit.
Wells Fargo (Control Tower)
1Open Control Tower
In the Wells Fargo app, open Control Tower — its hub for recurring payments and card-on-file merchants.
2See Recurring Payments
View the list of merchants that have your card on file or bill you on a schedule.
3Turn Off or Manage
Use Control Tower to see where your card is stored, then cancel with the merchant and turn off the card if needed.
Capital One
1Review Recurring Charges
In the Capital One app, check your transactions and the recurring/subscriptions view that flags repeating merchants.
2Use a Virtual Card
For future signups, Capital One's free virtual card numbers let you shut off a single merchant without affecting your real card.
3Lock or Dispute
Lock your card from the app or dispute an unauthorized recurring charge directly.
Chime
1Find the Charge
Open the Chime app and scroll your transaction history to find the repeating merchant.
2Cancel With the Merchant
Cancel the subscription on the merchant's side first.
3Disable the Card
Use Settings → disable card to block new charges, and contact Chime support to dispute an unauthorized recurring charge.
A "stop payment" or card block is a backstop, not a cancellation. If you skip cancelling with the merchant, you can still be charged through a backup method, billed a cancellation/late fee, or marked delinquent. Always cancel the agreement first.
The Smarter Long-Term Fix
Using your bank to chase down charges works, but it's reactive — you only find a subscription after it has already billed you, sometimes for months. The proactive fix is to keep a single list of every subscription with reminders before each renewal. That's exactly what a subscription tracker app does, and unlike a bank tool, it spans every card, app store, and payment app at once — see the hidden cost of forgotten subscriptions for why that matters.
